She was born in Amsterdam and spent her youth in France, Spain and South Africa.  She was a Cum Laude graduate of Kunstoefening, Amheim and was awarded a five-year scholarship by Queen Wilhelmina.  She completed her BA and MA degrees at the Academy of The Hague and received a second, five-year scholarship that enabled her to travel and work with other accomplished artists throughout Europe.

During the German occupation of Holland in World War II, Josie served the Red Cross, assisting transportation of patients from beach hospitals to the safety of inland facilities.  When the war ended, Josie Edell enjoyed a successful career in advertising.  

In the late 1960's , Edell moved to Charleston, South Carolina where she quickly gained recognition for her watercolors of historic Charleston architecture and the colorful natives of the low country.  She operated her own gallery on the corner of Queen and State Str   ...  [Displaying 1000 of 1142 characters.]  Artist bio
