A western Canadian painter and photographer, Harold William Townsend (aka: Bill Townsend; aka: H. William Townsend) was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and died in Parksville, British Columbia, near where he had lived since the early 1980s.

His primary medium was oil paint (occasionally accented with gold leaf). His subjects were wilderness landscapes, mountain views, shorelines, figures, and nudes. His style could be described as Fauvism*. The askART auction results have many excellent illustrations of his oeuvre. (1)

His art education includes studies at the Vancouver School of Art*, B.C. [now Emily Carr University of Art + Design] (1958 – 1959); art school in New York City (1959 – 1960); the University of Wisconsin (1961 – 1962); the Peter Aspell [see askART] School of Art, Vancouver (1980); and, a Federation of Canadian Artists seminar on Salt Spring Island B.C.
