The artist was born in Bristol and was the son of a coal merchant. At the young age of 25 Poole had the first of his works exhibited at the Royal Academy. Many successful exhibitions followed this and eventually Poole was elected an associate of the Royal Academy in 1846 and made an academician in 1861.
