Biography photo for Adelaide Hiebel
The following was submitted in September of 2006 by  her nephew Ben Hiebel:

She was born on June 26, 1879 in New Hope, Wisconsin.  Adelaide was a self styled artist who was not satisfied with her art ability, so she went to study at the Art Institute of Chicago. There she met Zula Kenyon, who became her teacher and mentor.

She taught  in the art department of Ohskosh College around 1916, but upon Kenyon's recommendation, attained a position at the Gerlach Barklow Calendar Company and relocated to Joliet, Illinois around 1918.

She married once, but it seems her husband did not keep good company, and was killed shortly after the marriage, and her family never even learned his real name. She never remarried.

Hiebel was an eccentric, successful artist and became known for her lavish parties. Her paintings brought as much as $10,000 each, and she attracted artists from across the nation to her annual artists' Open House and Gathering.
