Armand-Hubert-Simon Leleux was a pupil of Ingres. He followed him to Italy in 1835.  Leleux began exhibiting at the Salon in 1839.

He traveled to Spain and Germany before settling between Paris and Switzerland. He was a friend of Corot and Eugène Sue and writer Théophile Gautier.
