Carl Gustaf Hellqvist was born in Kungsör in 1851 and died in 1890 in Munich after spending a large part of his late career in Germany and France. Despite his short life, Hellqvist became known as one of the most prominent history painters of his time. With a technique reminiscent of Hugo Birger or why not Ernst Josephson, he received both the Royal Academy of Arts' gold medal in 1875 and a gold medal in Vienna in 1882.
