Contrary to her usual biographical information Eleanor Parke Custis was not a direct descendant of Martha Custis Washington.  The confusion probably arises because she shared the same name as Martha Washington's granddaughter, "Nellie" Custis.

Eleanor Parke Custis was born 28 July 1897 in Washington, DC the only child of Dr. Marvin Ashdowne Custis and Francis Henshaw (Baden) Custis.  Her father was a DC physician but more notably a DC bank executive.  He was born in DC on 11 Nov 1866 and died while visiting his daughter in Gloucester on 3 Jun 1956.

Eleanor's grandfather was Lemuel Wheeler Custis a blacksmith and farmer born in DC in 1834 who married Elizabeth Ashdowne on 11 Feb 1858.  He died on his farm home in Maryland on 8 Sep 1883 and his wife died at the home of her son, Dr. Marvin Custis, on 21 Jan 1907.
