Frederik Thoming was taught to paint at the Copenhagen and Hamburg academies. He spent the majority of his life in Italy, first traveling there from 1827-1837, and then returning in 1840.  He remained there for the rest of his life.

Among other museums, the works of this landscape painter can be admired in the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen and the Hamburger Kunsthalle.
