Hjalmar Johnsen (1852 - 1901) was active/lived in Norway.  Hjalmar Johnsen is known for Painting.

The Norwegian painter Hjalmar Johnssen originally worked as a sailor and shipbuilder in Oslo.  He turned to painting in 1879, and specialized in maritime and port pieces.

After a brief period of study in Paris, he left in 1882 for a few months in Kragerø down, to study with Frits Thaulow.  He found his motivation along the southern coast of the country where he held such diverse places as Fredriksvern, Skudeneshavn and Stavanger.

Works by Johnsen are kept at the Norwegian Folk Museum in Oslo.
