John McCrady (1911 - 1968) was active/lived in Louisiana, New York. John McCrady is known for Modernist figure, genre, religious and portrait painting.
Born in Canton, Mississippi, John McCrady had a deep exposure to southern culture during his childhood in Oxford, Mississippi. His father was an Episcopalian minister who also taught philosophy at the University of Mississippi.
In the mid 1940s, he worked on a series of paintings of nostalgic scenes of the Deep South including images of steamboats, plantation, and cotton fields. These works, very popular with the public, were exhibited at the Associated American Artists Gallery in New York City.
He also did Art Deco oil paintings such as
Mother Earth
and satirical paintings including
Mr. Gulliver of La-fay-ette County
, which expressed his feelings that artists interested in depicting realism were considered passe in a time when Abstract Expressionism was center stage.
From the mid 1950s onward, he seemed to lose interest in painting and devoted himself increasingly to teaching and writing. However, in the early 1960s, he ...
