Les Bohnenkamp was born in Fort Madison, Iowa in 1943.  Serving in the Navy following high school, Bohnenkamp attended St. Ambrose College and went on to study textile design at the University of Iowa, completing a thesis on the characteristics of the American Indian Osage braid.

In 1973 Bohnenkamp worked for Peter and Ritzi Jacobi in Frankfurt Germany on a variety of large scale commissioned tapestries.  After mastering techniques of traditional weaving, Bohnenkamp began experimenting with a variety of materials (animal hair, twine, leather) which led to the production of his first woven sculptural forms in 1969.

An accomplished weaver, Bohnenkamp went on to develop many off-loom techniques of coiling and knotting fibers, resulting in free-standing, column-like sculptures in the round.  In his first New York solo show at Parsons-Dreyfus Gallery in1979, Bohnenkamp exhibited works made from coiled and painted paper, which was to become his signature materia   ...  [Displaying 1000 of 3924 characters.]  Artist bio
