Toko Shinoda

Toko Shinoda (1913 - 2021) was active/lived in New York / Japan.  Toko Shinoda is known for Geometric abstraction painting and printmaking, calligraphy.

The artist turns 100 this year, and her show at the Japanese Gardens is a collection of forty-three prints and seven paintings curated by her long time dealer, Norman Tolman. The exhibition also celebrates the Gardens' fifty years in existence as well as the kick off of a number of lauded exhibitors the Gardens have brought to Portland in celebration of Japanese excellence in the arts. Toko Shinoda: Grande Dame of the Understated

Yohaku is the Japanese term used to refer to the abundance of white space within visual composition. This white space is also referred to as the the ideological "nothingness" of Chan Buddhism in China and Zen Buddhism in Japan: the nothing that is everything, a powerful entity that both defies and embodies the definition of its nothing name.
