John S. Blunt was (1798-1835) was born in the Portsmouth, New Hampshire area.  His brief career consisted of portraits, landscapes, and marine art, some with luminous qualities that gave special lighting effects to his subject. 

He also produced ship ornaments and miniatures in his early years.  Blunt was married in 1821, and in 1825, he opened an art instruction school in Portsmouth.  John S. Blunt moved to Boston in 1831 and took up residence at 54 Cornhill.

Many of John S. Blunt's family were seafaring people.  His father was a ships captain. Other family members were also captains.  Some experts in the field find his rendering of ships probably the most successful element of his work.  His later works are thought of as improving as he matured.  He was self taught and his canvases were not very large.  He painted on canvas as well as panel   ...  [Displaying 1000 of 1977 characters.]  Artist bio
