Marshall Joseph Jr Smith (1854 - 1923) was active/lived in Louisiana.  Marshall Smith is known for Bayou landscape, portrait, designer.

A painter of southern landscapes with fishermen, shanties, swamps and moss-laden trees, Marshall Smith Jr. was also the founder of the Southern Art Union (1880). He was born in Norfolk, Virginia and was active in New Orleans from 1870 to 1906. He arrived there as a child and took his first art lessons from Adolphe Jacquet in 1866. In 1870, he became a pupil of Richard Clague, the city's foremost landscape painter, and it was Clague who is credited as the greatest influence on Smith. He also studied with Theodore Sidney Moise.

In 1874, Smith left New Orleans to study in Rome and Munich and to tour Italy, England, and France. He returned to the United States in 1876 and by 1878 had returned to New Orleans to work as a clerk in his father's insurance company and later through 1888 to work as insurance broker. During that time he remained active as an artist, exhibiting landscapes, founding the Southern Art Union, and also in 1882, founding the Proteus carnival organization.
