I met Robert Cook in December 1950, in Rome, Italy at the American Academy, where I was visiting an architect, William "Fritz" Sippel, whom I had known
at Penn State, and who had won a year at the American Academy while a graduate student at Princeton. Among others I remember meeting at the Academy was Lukas Foss, already tipped as a coming composer; Spiro Daltas, an architect who later worked with Saarinen; and Henry Jova, who the last time I saw him in 1996 was a well-known Atlanta architect.

I do not know if Robert was then a resident at the Academy or had been one previously, but he already had a studio -- which he still has -- in a courtyard located on the Via Margutta. If he wasn't a member then, he surely had been
in the near past, for he and his wife, the writer/journalist Joan Marble Cook, were familiars of the place and had many friends there.
