Ma Shuqing was born in Tianjin and currently lives in Beijing and Paris. He graduated from Tianjin Academy of Arts and Crafts in 1976. In 1955, he studied free painting with Prof. Troeger and Prof. Zeniuk, and graduated from Munich Fine Arts Academy. In 2003, he established a studio in 798 Art District in Beijing.
