Charles Loloma

Charles Loloma (1921 - 1991) was active/lived in Arizona.  Charles Loloma is known for Sculpture, pottery, painting, jewelry, teaching.

Acknowledged as a pioneer among American Indian artists, Charles Loloma was a man of irrepressible creative energy. Although he is best known for his jewelry, he explored many other media, including painting, printmaking, pottery, and bronze castings.

Born a Hopi member of the Badger Clan in 1921 in Hotevilla, Arizona, he remained dedicated to his heritage until his death in 1991. His father was a weaver and his mother a basketmaker. He lived close to his birthplace and participated in its ceremonies. Charles Loloma was first a Hopi and then an artist, although to him they long ago became synonymous.

Throughout his career he sought to create beauty for it's own sake and sought to direct others to view beauty in all things. In Hopi, his name, Loloma, means "beauty".
