James B. Turnbull, Artist, Is Dead in Florida at 67; Painted Warfare in Action

James Baare Turnbull, the artist, whose World War II combat paintings hang in the Pentagon, died last Friday at Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla., where he had lived for many years. He was 67 years old.

Mr. Turnbull, who formerly lived in Woodstock, N.Y., had been severely crippled by arthritis and had undergone several operations in the last four years.

His murals, paintings and wire sculptures are included in private collections and galleries across the country. He was a combat artist for the Army in the war and saw duty in numerous areas, including the South Pacific.

In General Douglas MacArthur's historic return to the Philippines, Mr. Turnbull took part in the landing at Luzon's Lingayen Gulf and later painted scenes of amphibious warfare that are now part of Defense Department archives.
