Willard Midgette

Willard Franklin Midgette (1937 - 1978) was active/lived in New York, Oregon, Maryland.  Willard Midgette is known for Post-real figure and Indian genre painting.

Baltimore-born artist Willard Midgette was associated with the second generation of contemporary American realist painters.  He studied and later taught at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture; and also studied at Harvard College, earning a B.A. in 1959; at Boston University College of Fine Art; Pratt Institute; and Indiana University where he earned an M.F.A. in 1962. 

He was an Associate Professor of Art at Reed College from 1963 to 1971, and  then had a year's sabbatical in Roswell, New Mexico at The Roswell Arist-in-Residence Foundation.  From 1971 until his death, he was artist-in-residence and chair of the Art Department at St. Ann's School in Brooklyn.

Midgette's mature style, was characterized by life-size figures, mostly clothed, in a space that could be seen as a continuation of the viewers' space.
