Milton James Burns

Milton James Burns (1853 - 1933) was active/lived in New York, Ohio.  Milton Burns is known for Marine-coastal view painting, illustration.

A founding member of the Salmagundi Club in New York, Milton Burns was a highly acclaimed marine painter, one of the few who had actually been a sailor. His most prolific period was between 1871 and 1899, and he was also an illustrator for Harper's Weekly, Scribner's and Literary Digest. He is credited with the first illustrated article about Monhegan Island, and did numerous pen and ink drawings of that place, which appeared in Harper's magazine.

He was born in Mt. Gilead, Ohio. He became a student of John George Brown in New York, and his career as a marine painter began when he accompanied William Bradford on an arctic expedition in 1869. He also was a sketching friend of Winslow Homer, sharing with him the belief that an artist should go directly to nature for inspiration.

Some of his marine paintings are in the collection of the Mystic Connecticut Seaport Museum.
