A teacher and professional sculptor of constructivist works, often shimmering plastic cubes, Leroy Lamis has created work that is an outgrowth of his early fascination with machines, especially the automobile and the precision of the engines.

Lamis was born in Eddyville, Iowa. In his late teens, living in California, he worked in the film cutting room at MGM studios in Hollywood, and the celluloid, fast-paced world of the movies reinforced his interest in light and space. On week ends, he attended stock car races at El Mirage Lake.

He was briefly in the Army Air Corps, and at age 24, entered college to study art. He attended New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico, and Columbia University in New York. He was profoundly influenced by the writings of sculptors Naum Gabo and Richard Lippold, especially Lippold's idea of stretching material to its essence.
