Louis Gonzales

Louis (Wo Peen) Gonzales (1907 - 1990) was active/lived in New Mexico.  Louis Gonzales is known for Mural and Indian motif easel painting, pottery, singing.

A ceremonial dancer, singer, and governor of the San Ildefonso Pueblo, Luis Gonzalez was also a potter, painter in oil and tempera, and pioneering Pueblo muralist.  Among his artworks is a mural series, Pueblo of Seven Fires, at the YMCA College in Springfield, Massachusetts. 

Known also by the name of Wo Peen, meaning Medicine Mountain, he is considered one of the early artists that made up the "San Ildefonso School" and in the mid to late 1950s, was known for his dramatic paintings of powerful horses.

From 1944 to 1945, he was Governor of his Pueblo, although he lived much of his life in Santa Fe.

He was a model for sculptor Philip Sears, also did pottery demonstrations.  By the late 1960s, he had ceased painting, having lost his right hand in a hunting accident.
