Of Turkish decent, he was born in Germany and lives in Istanbul, Turkey.

Taner Ceylan studied painting in the Fine Arts Faculty at Mimar Sinan University between 1986 - 1991.  He then worked for the Fine Arts Faculty of Yeditepe University between 2001-2003 as a lecturer and worked as an editor in chief of arts of Time Out Istanbul Magazine between 2001-2006.
