Annette Messager was born in France, in 1943, and educated at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Since the late 1960s, she has worked in painting, sculpture, assemblage, video, photography, film, embroidery and installation, using objects like fishing nets, gloves and toys. She comments that she wants to "make life more interesting than art."

She has exhibited around the world in Berlin, Germany; New Delhi, India; Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; Japan; the Pompidou Center, Paris; Musee de Grenoble, France; and Museum of Modern Art, New York City.

Messager's work is in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; Hamburger Kunsthalle, Germany; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California; and the Tate Gallery, London, England.

A monograph, Annette Messager, authored by Catherine Grenier and David Radzinowicz Howell, was published in 2001 by Flammarion.
