Born in Washington, D.C, landscape painter Phillip Philbeck has long made his home in rural Rutherford County, North Carolina.  His subjects, mountains, rolling piedmont, and coastal views, appeal greatly to his artistic sensibility, as seen in the magnificent vistas, wide sandy shores, wonderful spring and fall foliage he paints.  He only needs to venture outside of his home and studio to find inspiration for his next landscape.  Philbeck’s canvases revel in a profusion of details, and he is especially known for the skies in his images. “The sky sets the basic tone for my landscapes,” he says.  Textures, shapes, and contrasts derived from many of nature’s wonders are rendered in vibrant colors and in interesting juxtapositions.  Dramatic light and atmosphere bathe his scenes.
