Irving Norman

Irving Norman (1906 - 1989) was active/lived in California / Poland.  Irving Norman is known for Surreal genre-other mod imagery.

Irving Norman has described his motivation to paint as a "quest to synthesize the abstraction of Picasso-what he called Picasso's "freedom of design"-and the social commentary of Orozco."

Norman was born Irving Noachowitz in 1906 in the city of Vilna, when it was still under the Russian Czar. At the end of WWI Vilna became part of Poland, which is what he claims as his birthplace. Norman began to sketch and paint in his mid-thirties out of a need to express the rage from his experience with war.

He received his formal art training under painters William Gaw and Spencer Macky at the California School of Fine Arts. He was then awarded the Albert Bender Prize in 1946 that enabled him to spend almost a year at the Art Student's League in New York, studying with Reginald Marsh and Robert Beverly Hale. Norman insisted that the greatest training he received was from his firsthand study of the "great monuments of world art."
