Chung Ray Fong

Chung Ray Fong (Born 1933) is active/lives in California / China.  Chung Fong is known for Abstract painting, calligraphy.

While starting out as a realist, descriptive painter, Fong turned to abstraction c.1956.  He was born 1934 in mainland China and left for Taiwan in 1949.  In 1975 he settled with his family in San Francisco, California.

1934  Born in Nanyang City, Henan Province, China
1949  Left China for Taiwan
1953  Graduated from the Political Staff College Art Department, Taipei
1956  Saw printed reproductions of Western abstract art at the USIS center in Taipei and intimately connected to their work. Abandoned realistic descriptive style and started painting abstract paintings.
1957  Joined the Fourth National Art Exhibition in Taipei
1958 Worked with artist friends Hu Ch’i-Chung, Sun Ying and Chu Pen-Le to mount exhibition called Four Seas Exhibition
Four Seas Exhibition, Taipei
1959  Chen Xian-dong and Yang Ji-fang joined the Four Seas Art Association
