Franz von Defregger

Franz von Defregger (1835 - 1921) was active/lived in Germany, Austria.  Franz Defregger is known for Peasant genre, history and narrative painting.

Defregger started his art career somewhat later in his life, beginning his training as a painter and that was in 1861.  In Munich he was taken on as a student by Carl von Piloty.  Starting 1878 he was professor at the academy in Munich.  Defregger transformed Piloty's realistic style of history painting into one which was more genre-like.  Thematically he showed a preference for tyrolese history, most especially scenes of farm and country life as well as from the fight for independence in Tyrol in 1809.  In the 1880's his paintings slipped into a more folksy-narrative style.

Born on April 30, 1835 in Stronach, Tyrol, he died on January 2, 1921 in Munich.
