Mathias Schmid was an Austrian genre and historical painter and illustrator. He was born in 1835 in Lake near Landeck, in Paznauner Valley / Tyrol. In 1850 Schmid took an apprenticeship with Gottlieb Egger for Tuifelemaler in Tarrenz. In 1853 he was in Munich. There from 1853-56 he worked as a gilder in Mayer'schen Hofkunstanstalt for ecclesiastical art. He studied from 1856 at the Munich academy at Hermann Anschütz with Johann Georg Hiltensperger and Johann Schraudolph and maintained friendship with Franz von Defregger. He was also temporarily active in Innsbruck.
