Alan Lowndes

Alan Lowndes (1921 - 1978) was active/lived in United Kingdom.  Alan Lowndes is known for Painting.

Largely self-taught, Alan Lowndes was born in Cheshire.  He moved to Cornwall in 1959, where he became a friend of Conor and Nancy.  Many of his paintings deal with the industrial and working class area where he grew up, although he employs a bright and colorful palette.  His work was included in the Tate show St. Ives 1939-1964 held in London in 1985.

Alan Lowndes has often been dismissed as a naive painter, which is complete nonsense.  He was a deeply intellectual man of very considerable intelligence, except for his love of alcohol.  Mind you, many a great writer, intellectual and painter has suffered from the same weakness.  Alan's drawings should never be underestimated, they are strong and go to the nub of scene without extra lines that confuse.  Sometimes his drawings are stand alone or most commonly they were ideas for a painting.
