The native of Thuringia Hermann-Josef Kuhna studied from 1964 to 1969 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Karl Bobek, Kurt Arnscheidt and Gert Weber. In 1972 he taught as a lecturer in Münster at the Institute of Art Education of the Academy Düsseldorf.

In 1979 he received a professorship which he held until 2010. Kuhnas work is characterized by the exploration of the effect of color. In a pricise painting, the artist creates a pattern of small color spots, which lead to an agile-flickering image effect. Hermann-Josef Kuhna lives and works in Düsseldorf. (fea)
