Jose Vital Branco Malhoa

Jose Vital Branco Malhoa (1855 - 1933) was active/lived in Portugal.  Jose Malhoa is known for Realistic portraits, caricature genre paintings, and luminous landscapes.

José Malhoa was a Portuguese artist born in 1855 in Caldas da Rainha. At the age of 12, he joined the National Society of Fine Arts and became a disciple of Miguel Angelo Lupi, Tomaz da Anunciação, and Victor Bastos. Malhoa was a founding partner of Grupo do Leão in 1881, which was part of the naturalist movement created around Silva Porto. He was known for his realistic portraits, caricature genre paintings, and luminous landscapes. Malhoa's work was exhibited in the Salons of the Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes from 1901 onwards, and he was elected president of the society in 1918. He was awarded a medal of honor in 1903 and the Columbano Prize, as well as the Grand Cross of Santiago. Malhoa was recognized internationally, receiving second medals at the Universal Exhibition in Paris (1900), at the International Exhibitions in Berlin (1896) and Madrid (1901), and first medals in Barcelona and Buenos Aires (1910).
