Richard Alan Nichols has a background in traditional impressionism. During his tenure at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, he was the recipient of numerous scholarships, grants and awards. He holds degrees from the Academy in both fine and commercial art.

Acutely aware of the delicate hues created by light, Nichols strives to render, in his words, "a visual poem" with each painting. He is philosophical about his work, always keeping in mind his favorite quote: "Art is the representation of that which the mind can imagine - but only the heart knows to be true."

Nichol's work is rendered in oil, charcoal and watercolor, and his goal is to use atmospheric color theories to convey warmth and sensitivity and dynamic juxtapositions of color and composition.
