Nebraska lost one of its great painters Monday when John Robert Weaver died at age 82.

A realist who, most notably, painted and drew portraits and images of trains and toys, Weaver was acclaimed in the art circles.“There’s no question, in my opinion, he was one of the best draftsmen, drawers, in this area in the last 40-50 years,” said former Sheldon Museum of Art director George Neubert. "He could really draw. When you went through his drawing books, of which there were many, you could see his talent.”

While not widely known outside the art community, three of Weaver’s large paintings are among the widely seen artworks in Lincoln -- portraits of Ernst Lied, Bob Devaney and former Sheldon director Norman Geske.
The latter, Neubert said, is a masterwork.
