Thomas Stanley Painter, more commonly known as "Stan" Painter, specialized in bright and pastoral California Landscapes, in particular, Mount Tamalpais and Marin County.

Stan predominantly worked with oil paints and had a preference for pink base coats, bright colors, and sparing use of varnish. These techniques lend a pastel-like glow to his work.

In high school Stan's skill as a draughtsman got him into the California College of Arts and Crafts. He later served a few years in the Army, and when he got out, Stan finished his education and got a degree in Commercial Art at San Jose State University, which lead to a career in advertising.

Stan Painter became an active member of the Bay Area California art scene when he left his job at the BBDO advertising agency to open up a frame shop and picture gallery in Larkspur, California.
