Adolph Heinze, born in Chicago in 1887, studied landscape painting under Karl Buehr and later was a student of William Merritt Chase. He was a member of the All-Illinois Fine Artists Association, Chicago Palette and Sculptors, and Chicago Gallery Association, where he exhibited in 1927. Heinze also exhibited at the Municipal Art League.

Heinze's work caught the attention of Louis W. Hill, President of the Great Northern Railway, and in 1928, Hill instructed the Great Northern Advertising Agent, W.R. "Bob" Mills to contract Heinze for landscape paintings of National Park that would be used to illustrate the 1929 Great Northern Railroad Calendars, produced monthly at that time. The Railway hired many artists to capture the "Swiss Alps" of America and sell it to prospective travelers from the East to bring them west through the "See America First Campaign."
