Alexandre Sacha Garbell was born in 1903 in Riga, Latvia. He began painting at the age of 13 and studied art in Moscow before moving to Paris in 1923 to train at the Académie Ranson with Roger Bissière. Garbell's style combined both Cubist and representational elements, and while he was initially drawn to abstraction, he became more interested in representational scenes as his career progressed.
