Arion Putnam

Arion Putnam (1870 - 1949) was active/lived in California.  Arion Putnam is known for Landscape, photographer.

There follows a brief biography of Arion Putnam, which may be of some
interest. My interest in the Putnams is their involvement in photography.
Therefore, most of the information that I have accumulated is related to
their careers in that field. Earl Brines, Lodi, California.

Arion Putnam, son of John R. and Ellen Putnam, was born in New York July
11, 1870. He was a native of New York City, and moved to Southern
California in 1888. Arion started a career as a commercial photographer in
Los Angeles in 1891. He was a principal in Putnam Commercial Photographers
(1895 - 1901), Putnam & Valentine (1901 - 1920), and Putnam Studios (1920 -
1949).

Arion married Rose Eberhart at Los Angeles in 1903 -1904. The couple moved to Eagle Rock, California circa 1910. They were residents of Eagle Rock until their deaths: Arion, March 11, 1949; Rose, June 11, 1960.

Both Arion and Rose were painters. They are listed in several directories,

Arion Putnam, son of John R. and Ellen Putnam, was born in New York July
11, 1870. He was a native of New York City, and moved to Southern

Both Arion and Rose were painters. They are listed in several directories,
and at least one of Arion's paintings is listed in a directory maintained
by the Smithsonian Institution. The writer does not know if either Rose or
Arion pursued painting as a profession. However, both exhibited their
paintings locally. e.g. Eagle Rock Annual Art Exhibits 1929 - 1932.


Biography from the Archives of askART

Born in NYC on July 11, 1870. Putnam settled in Los Angeles in 1888. While working as a photographer, he made painting trips to the High Sierra and along the coast. An Impressionist, his plein air landscapes are rare and from the brush of an accomplished painter. Putnam died in Los Angeles on March 11, 1949. Exh: Painters Club (LA), 1909; San Francisco Art Association, 1912; Calif. Art Club, 1912-19; LACMA, 1916; Calif. Liberty Fair, 1918; YWCA (LA), 1919; Eagle Rock Artists, 1929, 1932.
