Artur Grottger

Artur Grottger (1837 - 1867) was active/lived in Poland.  Artur Grottger is known for Academic romantic painter, creator of drawing series related to the January Uprising and the time preceding it..

Artur Grottger was a Polish academic romantic painter born in Ozorków, Poland in 1837. He studied painting with his father and later with Juliusz Kossak and Julian Maszkowski in Lviv. He also studied at the School of Fine Arts in Krakow and the Academy in Vienna. Grottger's work was strongly rooted in realism and Biedermeier tradition, but also had a romantic understanding of reality. He is known for his drawing series related to the January Uprising and the time preceding it, including "Warsaw I", "Warsaw II", "Polonia" and "Lituania". Grottger died in Cagnes-sur-Mer, France in 1867 at the age of 30 due to tuberculosis.
