Charles Thomas Bale was an excellent still life painter active in London in the second half of the nineteenth century. He painted predominantly fruit, but often included ceramics, glassware, and game objects in his compositions.

It is probable that Bale was influenced by George Lance (1802-1864) and William Duffield (1816-1863), who exhibited at the same time and dealt almost exclusively with the theme of still life.
