Eduardo Rosales Gallina was a Spanish artist born in Madrid in 1836. He was trained in the Nazarenism style at the Madrid Academy of Fine Arts and traveled to Italy in 1857, where he survived with difficulty until he obtained a government pension in 1860. He produced his first important works in Rome and had his first great triumph at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1864. He received important aristocratic, religious, and governmental commissions and was proposed as the first director of the newly founded Spanish Academy in Rome in 1873, a post he did not take up as he died. Rosales was a leading figure in 19th-century Spanish painting and his artistic career was strongly determined by his success in official exhibitions. He is known for his academicist aesthetic, historicist monumentality, and international academicism, and worked in various mediums including portraits, religious painting, and painting of popular types.
