“Now 91, An Artist Recalls when Walls were his Canvases: Out on the Prowl in Search of Lost Murals,” by Marilyn Fuss, LAT, Oct. 12, 1976, p. C7 and article adds, “Einar Petersen is a courtly, 91-year-old native of Denmark who has lived in Hollywood since 1915, for the last 50 years in the same quaint courtyard of cottages. A rustic neighborhood when he moved in … the years between 1912 and 1940 when Petersen painted perhaps 20 murals in such widely separated cities as San Francisco, Spokane, Omaha, Honolulu and Manila. He told me, moreover, that the walls of some 20 buildings in downtown Los Angeles had served as his canvases.

I asked where I might see the originals, but Petersen was uncertain. He had no records and, over the years, the names of so many buildings and businesses had been changed… so I began spending my lunch hours on the prowl… Broadway Cafeteria at 620 S. I asked where I might see the originals, but Petersen was uncertain. He had no records and, over the years, the names of so many buildings and businesses had been changed… so I began spending my lunch hours on the prowl… Broadway Cafeteria at 620 S. Broadway, where in 1923 Petersen had painted a panorama on three walls. Blending fantasy and Spanish history… one above the reception desk of the Mayflower Hotel at 535 S. Grand Ave… a mural showing the pilgrims landing in America… Rosslyn … 5th and Spring… the Rosslyn has been redecorated and Petersen’s work is now obscured by a false ceiling.”

Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store

Painter, muralist. Born in Copenhagen, Denmark on Oct. 17, 1885. Petersen served an art apprenticeship in his native city. A scholarship from the Danish Goverment allowed him to study art for several years in Paris, Rome, and Munich. He immigrated to America in 1912 and worked his way across country painting decorative panels in Nebraska, Oregon, and Washington before settling in Los Angeles in 1916.

He died there on Dec. 6, 1986. Member: Calif. Art Club; Painters and Sculptors of LA. Exh: Architects Bldg (LA), 1929; Scandinavian American Art Society (LA), 1939. Murals: University Club, Hotel Rosslyn, and Roos Bros. Cafeteria, all in LA; First NatI Bank (El Paso, TX); Honolulu City Hall; Spokane (WA) Caravansary. AAW; SCA; CA&A; LA Times, 10-20-1985; DR.
