Elsie Dinsmore Popkin

Elsie Dinsmore Popkin (1937 - 2005) was active/lived in North Carolina, New York.  Elsie Popkin is known for Landscape pastel painting.

Elsie Dinsmore Popkin received her B.F.A. in painting from Cornell University. In 1975 she became the first Artist-in-Residence at Reynolda House Museum of American Art, in Winston-Salem, NC, and was named Winston-Salem Artist of the Year in 1989.

Popkin has been a Fellow at Yaddo and at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. In June 2002 she was an Artist-in-Residence at Crater Lake National Park, as part of the Park’s centennial celebration. Her pastel paintings of views from the windows of Cornell’s Herbert F. Johnson Museum was the focus of her show at that museum in June 2003.

Popkin has been working in pastels since she was a teenager. She turned from figure to landscape twenty years ago, painting in situ to capture her response to the intensity of color and light of each particular place.
