Erna Lange

Erna Lange (1896 - 1984) was active/lived in New Jersey, Arizona, New York.  Erna Lange is known for Southwest landscape painting.

Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Erna Lange became a highly respected female artist in the early 20th century at a time when successful artists of her gender were much in the minority.

She attended finishing school in Germany and then enrolled in the National Academy of Design in New York as well as Cooper Union and the Art Students League. She took private lessons from Cecilia Beaux, a much renowned figure painter.  From 1924 to 1929, Erna, having received a Chaloner Prize, attended the Academies Colarossi, Grand Chaumiere, Julian, and Billoul in Paris and was a private student of Ferdinand Olivier (1873-1957).

However, the circumstances facilitating her studies in Paris, were humiliating for her.
