Ethel Mars

Ethel Mars (1876 - 1956) was active/lived in Massachusetts, Illinois / France.  Ethel Mars is known for Portrait, landscape painting, illustration, prints.

Though Ethel Mars was an American painter-printmaker born in Springfield, Illinois in 1876, she lived a great deal of her life in France.  After study at the Cincinnati Art Academy, in Ohio, Mars traveled several times to Europe from 1900 until she decided to live in Paris in 1906.  At the outset of World War I in 1914, Mars drove an ambulance, but returned to America to live in Provincetown, Massachusetts for the remainder of the War.  While there, she adopted the white-outline woodblock style favored by Provincetown artists, creating prints of Parisian street life and cafes.  She returned to France in the late 1920s.  From the time of their meeting at the Cincinnati Art Academy, Mars and artist Maud Squire became life-long companions, traveling and working together.
