Ezrom Kgobokanyo Sebata Legae

Ezrom Kgobokanyo Sebata Legae (1938 - 1999) was active/lived in Africa.  Ezrom Legae is known for Painting and sculpture.

Ezrom Legae studied under Cecil Skotnes and Sydney Kumalo at the Polly Street and Jubilee Art Centres in Johannesburg between 1959 and 1964, where he was later to become an art instructor and then co-director.  A USSALEP travel scholarship awarded in 1970 for travel and study in the United States and Europe introduced him to many great modernist works which were to have a significant influence on his style.

Legae’s practice as an artist is absolutely convincingly located at a cusp between African sensibility and reference on the one hand, and the transcendent and universalist preoccupations of international modernism on the other.  In this regard, many of his sculptures register equally the kind of abstractionist simplification of European and American figurative sculpture of the mid 20th century and the hieratic and animist charge and proportion of African traditional woodcarving.’¹
