Felix Joseph Barrias

Felix Joseph Barrias (1822 - 1907) was active/lived in France.  Felix Barrias is known for History and religious subject painting.

An academic* painter of history and religious subjects, Felix Joseph Barrias is the son of a painter on porcelain and the brother of sculptor Louis-Ernest Barrias.  Felix studied at the École des Beaux-Arts* in Paris and followed the teachings of Leo Cogniet. 

In 1844, he received significant recognition by winning the Grand Prix de Rome* for his painting, Cincinnatus, a scene of receiving ambassadors to the Roman Senate. In 1845, he won a 3rd class medal for his Paris Salon* painting entry, Sappho, and received a first-class medal in 1851 for his painting, Exile of Tiberius.

Barrias earned a 2nd class medal for Jubilee of 1300 at the Exposition Universelle, Paris-1855, and received a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle, Paris-1889. He was made an Officer of the Legion of Honour in 1897.
