Ferdinand Keller

Ferdinand Keller (1842 - 1922) was active/lived in Germany.  Ferdinand Keller is known for Painting.

Ferdinand Keller was a German painter who specialized in history paintings classical allegories and symbolist works.   He was also a landscape painter, but these works were primarily studies that would become backgrounds for his historical and symbolist works.

He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe under the well-known painter and teacher Johann Wilhelm Schirmer.  He traveled extensively, first to Switzerland in 1866, then to Rome for two years from 1867 to 1869, where he painted dozens of studies - the fountains of Rome and landscapes of the Campagna - that were to be the foundation for many later works.  Always drawn to the classical past, he became one of Germany's most important "History" painters and was known as the German counterpart to the Austrian Hans Makaert.  He painted large allegorical compositions and murals for public buildings.
