Diziani specialized in processing antique elements in his paintings, which was characteristic of his work. He was influenced by the rediscovery of antiquity in the burgeoning classicism of the 18th century. The present painting, which depicts a scene from Livy's history of Rome, is an example of Diziani's interest in ancient myths and histories
