George L Constantine

George L. Constantine (20th Century) was active/lived in Massachusetts / Greece.  George Constantine is known for Naturalist, romantic, and abstract painting.

George Constantine, (20th Century)

Constantine was born in Greece.  He came to Boston as a young boy and worked hard to pay his own way through seven years at the School of the Museum Of Fine Arts, Boston.  He entered the school in 1916.  His anatomical work was highly praised and by his second year at school he became the assistant to Philip Hale, professor of anatomy.

His earlier work is naturalistic and romantic with a slight touch of fauve design and exaggerated proportions.  Many of his works were of local area Boston and Gloucester scenes that, although American, had hints of his European birth.

During the depression, Constantine worked in the field of stained glass.  This led him towards spatial, geometric order and eventually abstract art.  His later work became influenced by the international style of Klee and Kandinsky.
